Most people have at one point experienced acne which can lead to scars over time.

You can create scars by picking at spots and acne which is why this is never recommended and instead we recommend a warm compass to help relieve the spot.

Sometimes, however, you leave the spot alone and a scar can still develop as a complication, Scarring happens when your skin attempts to repair these lesions by forming new collagen fibres. These repairs usually aren’t as smooth and flawless as the original skin.

Any type of acne spot can cause scarring, but it’s more common with nodules and cysts as these are deeper forms of acne.

Acen scars can be distressing but we have a range of treatment options.

All about acne scars

Acne scars vary dramatically in appearance but most scars will fall into two types.

Hypertrophic or keloid scarring:

This kind of scarring happens as a result of your skin trying to heal. Sometimes your body will create too much collagen to try and repair itself. This excess results in scars that have a raised appearance.

Atrophic or depressed scarring:

This type of scarring has a more dramatic appearance.

They can be broken into two main types of scarring:

Ice pick scars – These are small holes on the surface of your face looking almost like the skin has been pricked with a needle.
Boxcar scars – These are craters in the skin. They are usually round in shape with raised sides.

Treatments available

Treatments may take some time. if you still have active acne we will need to be cautious to prevent the spread of bacteria. If active acne is still a problem we would usually recommend looking at treating the acne first.

Microneedling – Dermal Roller treatments can produce some great results in tackling acne scarring. We would usually recommend a course of treatment depending on the severity of the scarring.

Derma Pen – we have seen great results tackling acne scars by minuscule damage to the skin and speeding up the production of collagen and oxygen. The bacteria that causes acne is killed and new skin cells are stimulated.

Skin Peels –Skin peels contain glycolic & salicylic acid to reduce oil production, exfoliate the skin, unclog pores and kill bacteria. They are completely safe and painless with little or no downtime – just minimal redness.

Derma Roller – Derma Roller is an effective treatment for acne scarring once the acne is under control.
